Where Im From

Im from names put on me -
American born confused desi as a friend once said
Im from distortions, uncertainty, I think
3 people and mostly friends
Humid weather and tense feelings
Trailer parks, farming villages and beautiful houses
Parents that never knew me
Pictures and stories of grandparents and relatives I never knew
morality and tradition
Always feeling old and half-full
Humanity and the need to know
Turbans, fear, struggle
My parents predestination
Chocolate, laughter, coffee and sleep
Diaspora of cultures and resentment
29 years on relying on myself
Hope for my children, nieces and nephews

  1. Puneet- Thanks for all your hard work! Miss you and the others who could not make it Friday (Thanks Tracie!). You missed a great story told by Christina about an "airhead" named Mercedes. Should be our next writing prompt...Forgive if my previous comment attempt posted. Got a free verse on http//:www.halfwaydownthestairs.net e-lit journal today. And have had lots of rejections too. Excited about this blog! Kudos Puneet!!!

  2. P.S. Your "where I'm from" poem was very moving. As I read it, I could almost hear your voice echoing or reciting in rounds. Like someone on the outside looking in. Just wanted to share that image. Thanks for what you so vulnerably shared with us. Lisa

  4. Thanks, Puneet, for getting us started. Friends, look for some "prompts" from me in the next week. Your responses will help Karen and me and your teacher leaders ready to apply for funding for next year. Diane
